Return to Mayo Clinic for the 26th Annual Nicotine Dependence Center Conference

History of Mayo Clinic

Now on Netflix, Ken Burns Presents Mayo Clinic.

Did You Know? William J. Mayo, son of Mayo Clinic founder, William Worrall Mayo, graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1883.?

Tobacco Treatment Specialist Certification

Re-certification for Tobacco Treatment Specialists requires Continuing Education Credits. To stay up to date, I participate in webinars and specialized online training. Additionally, I will be attending my 3rd Mayo Clinic Nicotine Dependence Center Annual Conference later this month. Conference attendance isn’t required because CEU’s can be obtained online. However, I am attending to learn first-hand from the best in the business. I continue my commitment to supporting customers who trust me to help them break their nicotine dependency.

Mayo Clinic Nicotine Dependence Center

The Mayo Clinic Nicotine Dependence Center is an on-campus treatment facility at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. This center is dedicated exclusively to treating tobacco dependence. It is also the home to the country’s only Residential Treatment Program. Residential Treatment is an inpatient program for tobacco users. The doctor-supervised, 8-day program was established at Mayo Clinic in 1992 and has treated over 1300 patients.

Conference Agenda

The program schedule for the conference has a heavy emphasis on ENDS (Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems) products. Teenagers are not our target market but a lot more needs to be done at every opportunity to tame the trend. We often receive calls from concerned/panicked parents. I strongly discourage parents from making an appointment for their teens. (See ‘Why We Don’t Schedule Teen Appointments’). I will, however, encourage them to bring their teen in to talk at no charge. I am hoping the conference training will better equip me to guide teens and parents alike on this issue.

It’s encouraging to see Hookah on the agenda because we have large communities who smoke the flavored tobacco. Shisha smoking is a strong part of many cultural traditions in local Arab and middle eastern communities. The increasing popularity of Hookah Lounges & Bars in Michigan also contributes to youngsters becoming addicted to nicotine.

Cannabis also has a place on the schedule, which is important. The growing legalization (no pun intended) and popularity of marijuana is already starting to raise concerns, especially among parents. (See ‘Is Marijuana Addictive?’).
