What are nicotine edibles?
By now, you have probably heard about edibles, or gummies. In modern times, these terms are generally used to describe consumable forms of THC. Traditionally, this was accomplished by smoking a marijuana cigarette. It appears now that a new form of digestible product may be available soon, nicotine edibles.
Who will make them?
Altria Group Inc. is the parent company for Phillip Morris USA. Altria is one of the world’s largest producers and marketers of tobacco, cigarettes and related products. They have just committed up to $12M in private financing to Lexaria Bioscience Corp.
Lexaria Bioscience Corp. is a biotech company that has developed and commercialized DehydraTECH technology. Altria is teaming up with Lexaria to investigate oral forms of nicotine delivery using DehydraTECH technology.
What is DehydraTECH technology?
DehydraTECH technology is used to formulate and manufacture edible consumer products. This technology allows compounds to be developed with less or no odor and flavor. Currently, this technology is being used to develop and commercialize non-combustible hemp products, i.e. cannabis edibles.
Summary
I’m not surprised that Altria is interested in technology to mask flavors and speed up delivery of nicotine. Nicotine edibles will allow nicotine to be delivered to your brain very efficiently. Also, it can be accomplished without damaging your lungs. However, I fear this technology may also make your even more addicted to nicotine. Electronic nicotine devices may have already accomplished that.
BUT IS THIS REALLY WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS? It may be that Big Tobacco needs nicotine edibles to stay profitable and relevant, but people who are addicted to nicotine need more (and effective) options for helping them break a dependency on nicotine products; not more convenient ways to feed an addiction.
