Something surprising happened with my e-mail marketing today.
I sent a campaign to my contact list and got an overwhelming number of responses compared to normal.
Subject Line: Attention Closet Smokers Who Want To Quit
So what does this mean?
It means that most organizations probably have a significant population of closet smokers (and other tobacco users) who want help with quitting, but will never ask for it or utilize the tobacco cessation resources provided.
Because they don’t want their employers to know they smoke.
There are a number of reasons that smokers remain closeted:
-They may feel shame/embarrassment about their smoking
-They could worry it might interfere with workplace advancement
-It might be incongruent with their otherwise healthy/active lifestyle
-They may have been untruthful about their tobacco use on health/medical coverage forms to avoid tobacco surcharges and higher premiums
It’s probably a combination of these things.
So what now?
Address it.
Empathize with your closet smokers. Let your team know that you understand the challenges some smokers have with coming forward or with participating in corporate-sponsored smoking cessation programs.
Let them know you care about them, too…and want to help them.
(Here’s comes the self-serving portion of my article)
Inform them that you have partnered with Coach Kelly and GET FIT TO QUIT to offer modern, high-level customized support at a fraction of individual cost AND without losing their anonymity about their smoking status.
It’s simple. I’m not going to verify their employment.
The employer pays nothing.
The employees feel valued.
Smokers obtain access to the best help available (with special pricing).
I help more smokers achieve a better life for themselves (and acquire more clients).
The company improves their bottom line with healthier employees, reduced absenteeism and reduced healthcare costs.
